Welding aluminum is right out without a high frequency, high voltage
superimposed on the output. Before the rectifier, the alternator output
is 3 phase anyway, which isn't really useful in this case. With
aluminum, there's also a serious need to be able to adjust the current
while welding.

Sounds like a good cheap DC TIG-- good enough for steel and stainless
steel. You can do the same with a DC buzzbox, a torch, and a bottle of
argon though.
