My experience with industrial gear boxes says that
this is a very smart thing to do. Where we have had
frequent failures of gearbox bearings and broken
gears, synthetic gear lube has reduced those failures
to almost none. When I first had the lube specialist
change the gearboxes to synthetic, he complained
loudly that all the seals would start leaking. The
seals did not start leaking and gearbox failures went
from 4 per year to 1 every two years. By the way, I
don't work for an oil company.
