Oh wise sages, I need some guidance to get my 235 back in running order. This
235 is in my 56 truck. I has about 30k miles on it since a rebuild in 1964. It
had been running fairly decently (not great) and all of a sudden runs like
crap. It hesitates on take off and only seems to run good above about 2500
rpm. It had been sitting for several months and my first thought was bad gas.
Not sure how old the gas is but at least 6 months. The tank was almost empty,
so I filled it up and drove it about 20 miles. I got it back home and it
stalled and I could barely restart it to get it back in the shed.
About 6
months ago I put in a Pertonix ignition with their high output coil. Per their
instructions, I left the plug gap at 0.035 and still use that ballast
resistor. That change didnt seem to do much one way or the other. The only
thing I did right before it started running poorly, was clean the oil bath air
filter.
I pulled a few plugs and they looked ok, not sooty or oily. I checked
the pertronics unit and it is still securly fastened in there. I pulled the
carb and took the top of and didnt see any crud in there. I had rebuilt it
about a year ago. I havent run it down the road since I put the carb on last
night, but when I stab the pedal off idle, it stumbles pretty bad which seems
like a bad accellerator pump.
I am going to check timing tonight and look at
the rest of the plugs. I also should mention is I havent set the valves for
the last 10 years which is only about 3k miles.
So, what would you guys
suggest as the best steps to follow to get this thing back in order?
