    Harry,
     My situation is slightly different than yours, but what I did might 
solve this problem for you.  If you are using the standard, later, mid 
motor mounts, then the hugger headers are quite likely to do the job for 
you.  My son and I, put a small block 400 into a 47 International frame, 
which is very narrow and has a similar problem with the steering box.  
The hugger headers worked quite well for this installation.
      I have a 55 chev Cameo, with a 454, and solved this problem by 
cutting and re-welding the two back tubes on the LH header so it would 
clear the steering box.   It took a little thinking, but I was able to 
do this without changing the length of the header pipes. This allows me 
to use the 1 3/4 inch full size headers in the truck.
     I am almost certain that the hugger headers will work for you, but 
there is the other option.
