Nothing to recover. This car sat up for 3 years. These is a small residual
pressure, and no apparent oil on any hose joints etc.  So I'm hoping the
compressor seal just dried and the R-12 bled off. We shall see.

I don't understand this part. I presume you mean close the valve as soon as
there is no (or very little) liquid left. What happens if you leave it on a
little longer?
