No one said they don't absorb _any_ of the torque, only not _all_ of it. If
nothing else, they keep the wheel from slipping while the spinner tightens
itself.

It doesn't, necessarily. The splines were shot on my current TR3A when I
bought it, a situation I was blissfully unaware of while I drove it for
several months. It wasn't until I tried to change a tire that I discovered
the problem. After cleaning & lubing the splines and reinstalling with my
usual "3 whacks" tightening, I backed out of the driveway, and took off
briskly uphill. Or rather tried to, all I got was a loud whirring noise and
the car rolled backwards down the rather steep hill !
Lacking the cubic dollars to replace the defective parts (a decent set of
wires costs more than I paid for the car !), I immediately converted to
steel wheels. The ruined wires are still in the attic somewhere ...
