It can compress air more and more efficiently than a one-stage compressor.
Compare the CFM specs at equal pressures for 1 and 2 stage models. The
capacity of a one stage model drops off real fast as the pressure goes up.
A compressor is sort of the opposite of a steam engine, and marine
steam engines were usually three-stage.
