David, If the rear seal was installed at the factory or by a trained
mechanic, it will only be crimped in 3 or 4 places. Even if it is
crimped all of the way around, you can remove it with a chisel. Aim the
chisel toward the rear of the housing. about 3/4 of an inch past the
front edge of the seal. Use a very shallow angle so that most if the
force is aimed towards the rear and not towards the housing. The chisel
should cut into the seal but not cut all of the way through it. Give it
a couple of good whacks, then rotate the housing and repeat. You should
see the seal start to separate from the housing. Keep walking the
chisel around the housing until the seal comes off. I have never damaged
a rear housing with this method. If you are not comfortable with a
chisel. you could use a dremel tool and a cut off blade to cut through
the crimped metal shell. It will probably take much longer but will give
you piece of mind. When you replace the seal, make sure that you oil the
seal liberally before you install it. After the seal is in place, you
should crimp it in three places with a chisel to keep it from falling
off.
