 Does the car have a PCV system.
Mine did that a few times with a PCV  and I found out that the PCV had a faulty
spring.
I replaced the PCV and all is well.
This was on a Sprite with a side draft Weber, without the PCV oil will leak out,
with a bad PCV oil will be sucked into the intake manifold and thus get burnt
resulting in clouds of smoke but only every now and then.
