But is there a way I can simply check to see if I have any shorts in the
wiring circuit anywhere that I cannot see that the battery charge will drain
away to?
I presume with everything switched off if I connect a meter it would register
a current flow if there is a short?
So I set the meter to read amps and connect it in series with the battery?
Is that right?

That'll work, Guy. You could also check ohmage from the disconnected
positive battery lead to ground. Should be effectively zero.

Second question .. are there any checks I should carry out on the voltage
regulator. It looks OK, but since the engine isn't in yet I cannot check the
operation in use, but would feel hapier if I could check it "static"

Not sure how urban/rural your location is, but my local
alternator shop was more than happy to check out any
pieces of the charging system for me. You got a local
shop?
