I've been trying to track down generator problems, and I'm to a point
where I'd appreciate some help.

Some background:
The tach quit working on my '60 bugeye a couple months ago. It seemed
to me to exhibit some of the same problems as the speedo when it quit
before that, and since I'd been meaning to send the speedo off for a
rebuild, I sent the tach also. (BTW: Palo Alto Instruments did a very
nice job on both of them.)

But on replacing the tach, I found it still didn't work. Further
investigation revealed the gear box on the back of the generator had a
stripped gear. Fortunately(?), having had previous problems with the
little gearboxes, I had several lying around in various states of
disrepair. I swapped in a replacement for the stripped gear (does
anyone know, should I repack the little gearbox with lube? what kind?).

Only then to discover that the generator no longer generated. Running
through the tests in the manual, I found it generated about 5v with the
terminals connected to each other. The manual says "see ARMATURE
section". Of course, there is no section labeled "ARMATURE", but there
was some info about looking for burned sections. I found none.

I did clean the little lines between the commutator sections and cleaned
the commutator with electrical connection cleaner spray, put the
generator back in, and it now generates with the link in place.

The current problem:
But, finally, to the problem I need help with, it doesn't generate when
connected normally.

I assume this has something to do with the control box. I'm worried
that I find no resistance between either of the generator leads and
either of the D/F terminals on the control box. That is D lead to D
terminal = 0 ohms; D lead to F terminal 4 ohms; F lead to F terminal 0
ohms; F lead to D terminal 4 ohms. Is this normal?

Are there obvious problems I can look for with the control box? The
troubleshooting section on that is confusing to me.

Thanks for any help.
