Mike,
Yes, I know he wrote that article, but he had restored 6 Bugeyes himself
well before he drove Rob's, plus he was a professional mechanic in the
early '70s before he wrote for a living. I didn't really know what a
Bugeye was until 1984 when Peter wrote an article called "Return of The
Bugeye" about how he tracked down the first Bugeye he ever bought. He flew
out from california to Wisconsin and drove the car back. That and many
other trips he's written of have been the inspiration for many road trips
I've taken with cars that otherwise have no business going any farther than
around the block. I was 18 at the time and my father convinced me an MGB
was a far more "sensible" first car since it had roll up windows. Egan
wrote the book (literally, I guess) on cars with character - he has owned
everything from his 6 Bugeye Sprites, (not including the one he bought back
as two), TR-3's, MGB's, Midgets, Lotus 7, Lotus 11, etc. He also has
owned most British bikes on anyone's "gotta have one" list, and is a Ducati
expert. A personal favorite was the trip he documented when he put
together a Westfield (Lotus) eleven with a 1275 then drove it cross
country. The car has no weather protection except whatever the driver is
wearing.

Yes, I'm a bit of a fan.

You know, maybe I'll drive the Bugeye to Illinois in January like Clarici
suggested after all.......
