I got many replies to my question. Here is a summary.

1. Offer for a float. The option that I took.
2. Offer for a sending unit.
3. Suggestions to be careful drilling a float that contains gas and
fumes. Makes plenty of sense. Then plug hole/holes with some type of
epoxy. I guess a gas resistant Permatex (sp?) compound might also work.
4. An email telling me that you can buy just the float from:

H.D. Rogers & Sons
Import Auto Specialists
3418 Barksdale Blvd.
Bossier City LA 71112 USA
(318) 742-3651 phone (318) 742-5044 fax
http://www.hdrogers.com

Never have dealt with them, but they have floats and many other parts.

5. My favorite. Get from an auto supply store a brass carb. float and
fasten/solder it to the sender wire.

Once again the list has come though with lots of useful ideas and
information.
And all of this before my morning coffee.

Many thanks,

77 Midget - soon to have a more correct gas gauge :-)
