Buy.

The joke factor is worth it.

The caveat that I would put on it, is that you ask him to be responsible
for finding it a good home, if it isn't welcome there. I shudder every
time I hear of another parts car. (My personal opinion. Everyone is
entitled to theirs.) I can think of two good homes for it within 3 blocks
of my house. The closest is my garage (and I would be willing to pay the
shipping to here if he doesn't want it) and the car would then be restored
over a long period of time to 'as close to original as possible without
being too fanatical' and the other is a neighbour with $ resources to
restore it, has experience with Brit cars (lived there for years, drove a
Riley), and is looking for a Brit project car to teach his 'soon to be
driving age' son about auto mechanics. I'm sure that there are many other
restoration homes out there too.

So, my vote is to do the prank and save the car.

I do not think we need to be worried about market values.
What is a car worth? as much as you can get someone to pay for it.
Is a gold level Bugeye worth $30,000? Only if you can find someone to
buy it at that price.
I would rather have the basket case than some the rusty rolling shells
(no floors, seats, sills, engine, trans etc.) that I have looked at
where people are asking $1000.00 and up.
$800 for a basket case should have enough usable parts to be worth it
especially if you throw in the practical joke factor.
I say go for it.<
