Paul, Are you talking about the original rear seal?  It has a shield like you 
say.  You should have removed it and replaced it with a different seal like 
Bill says in the instructions.  Going to be hard in the car, you might want to 
pull it all out again or cut a hole in the bottom of the car like Frank did to 
replace this seal.  Didn't someone do the work for you?
