The
battery is not there, but the starter is, rusty casing, but It doesn't hurt
to try and see if it turns over.

But if I hook up a starter, and the valves are stuck, won't it push through
with enough force to cause damage even if I just tap it? Plus being the age
and condition..the starter might stick open and that would be real bad.

Another question. It's a 68 MK IV with negative Earth. I've got no indicator
to tell me what battery to buy. Can I get one from Kragen that will work? >>

It doesn't sound to me like you are ready to adjust the valve lash in that
engine, esp. if you think the valves might be "stuck." What makes you think
they are stuck? Is there a lot of rust under the rocker cover? If so, you
should really pull the head and rebuild from there. It may need a full
engine rebuild.

You should be able to get a remote starter from most good auto supply stores,
or you can order one from Harbor Freight ($5.99) or JC Whitney.

As far as a battery, don't go overboard. My local Pep Boys store has a pile
(literally) of used batteries for $29. Most are group 26, which is what you
need. Make sure you get the battery with the terminals on the correct sides.
26 and 26R have the terminals on different sides. See which battery cable
is connected to the starter solenoid. That is the positive cable. Get the
battery that has the + pole on that side, with the posts to the front of the
engine compartment.

Good luck, and keep posting.
