A cluster gear (laygear) is a 1 piece unit with 4 gears cut out of one
piece of metal. NOT CHEAP! Noise in first and reverse are typical on
all pre 1500 Spridgets. The noise should be about the same as any other
manual trans car sounds when in reverse. First/reverse on our cars is
the same gear and it is straight cut and non synchronized making it
noisy.
When they get real noisy, then it is time to think about it.
When they start to clunk and moan, then it's time to consider it.
When they stop working, it's time for a 5 speed.
Since the 5 speed conversion costs about the same as a rebuilt ribcase.
