At your requests....
A truly beautiful fall day Saturday, a Chamber of Commerce day. Made
more
beautiful not by the chirping of birds, but rather that of tires leaving
the pits, or climbing the hill after turn 5. The smell of autumn comingling
with the sweet castor bean smoke and the brat grills. My senses were
overwhelmed by the sight of the variety of cars... Volvo Amazons, Renault
Alpines, Saab Sonetts, MGs, Healeys, Triumphs, modern and very vintage both
in the paddock and the park. Oustanding. And the sounds of heavy iron
rumbling past throbbing at my chest and high reving screamers tearing at my
ears, and all the octaves in between was exhilerating. I had my 10 year old
daughter with me. It was her first race and mine for a very long time. She
loved it. She loved seeing the Healeys like the one her Daddy is building
for her (I had better hurry). She was very tolerant of me wanting to chat
about the cars we saw. A good sign, though the pressure to continue work on
the 100-4 has been turned up.
Then there was "the ride". Gar took Frank, Ron, and me (separately) out
for a few laps. We each think he was faster with US in the car. I was a tad
nervous at first and didn't notice anything, second lap was terrific. Its
amazing how your senses can adapt to 200 MPH (that WAS how fast we were
going, wasn't it?). After several beers and a brat my pulse returned to
normal. Those brats help. We sat on the hill enjoying the warm sun and
watching the afternoon qualifying while chatting and meeting folks and
comparing cars. My daughter thought it time to leave after six hours which
was longer than I'd expected she'd bear it. But it wasn't a question of her
tolerating, she honestly enjoyed herself, but she wanted to get home before
dark.
To those I had the pleasure to meet, thank you. It was good to put faces
to names. Thanks to Thickos for the hospitality and esp. Gar for the ride.
It was great to meet Frank and Dave. A wonderful day that'll be memories
for a long time.
        I gotta go. Peter C
                sorry for the long post.
