Frank, its off now. Steve, here is how I did it. I took a pair of channel lock
pliers and duct taped up the upper jaw to pad it. I then got a 8-32 screw about 
1
inch long and held it with my needle nose vice grips up by the screw head. I put
the narrow end of the screw against the pin and squeezed this with the channel
locks (making sure that the taped jaw was against the knob). With slight 
pressure
the pin is now stuck in the (no longer) spring loaded hole and the knob is 
removed
(there were no knobs harmed during this procedure I just described) and ready to
ship to it's anxious recipient. Thanks for all the great advice, this just 
happened
to work for me.     Brad
