Crankcase ventilation question

Good morning list:

I recently swapped my stock valve cover with a vent to the carbon cannister
with an aluminum valce cover with a vented oil cap and no fitting to the
carbon cannister.  I noticed that after the engine had warmed up a bit, the
car would sputter and die when I opened the filler cap to check for blow-by.
Is that normal?  I have a gulp valve, and not the PCV valve.  Could I have a
faulty check valve from the air pump?  How would I check that?  Could it be
due to the fact that I am not using a vacuum advance?  I never noticed this
phenomenon before; last year when I most recently adjusted the valves, I had
the engine running briefly without the valve cover, and there were no
problems.

Additionally, a new phenomenon this season that has just starter happening
is that at idle, if sitting for more than twenty or thirty seconds, the
idles declines below the 1000 level, where it was stable, to 600-700, and
would stall out if I don't apply fast idle.  Could these problems be
related?  Besides removing my smog equipment, how would I fix?  The car runs
well in traffic and at highway speeds.
