lary-larry-larry! in that order. he-he:)! if you are experiencing what i
believe you are, you have either shot set of dist shaft bushings or the
point cam's tolerance in relationship to the main shaft is bad. what you
are experiencing is a variable point gap caused by the main shaft and point
cam never being at the exact same tolerance from 1 spark to a plug to the
next. you can gap the points untill you are blue in the face and this will
haunt you for ever. experienced this with a customer's morgan. at 3500
rpm it broke up and had a choppy idle. changed evrything due to not knowing
quality and age of what was there. still persisted. swapped out the dist
for a "known good" more like n.o.s. distributor and it ran like a whole
other car! put back in old original dist. and evry bad habbit came back!
as far as dist main shaft bushings go i am unaware of their availability
anywhere. that is a"good" machinist type of job. i have a mechanical
advance lucas comp. dist. here for just that repair for a customer. i also
have a n.o.s. lucas dist here we were considering swapping housings if upon
disassembly the original main shaft was in good shape. franken dist.!!!!!
when i got my degree in automotive technology in college we were taught to
dismantle and examine evrything! not just run out and get a remanufactured
or used one and exchange parts. we were expected to repair what was wrong
and restore the component to a functional state again. this is how things
were before planned obsolescence became a rule instead of the exception.
almost anything can be repaired if you want it done! that is what gets done
in restoration of wierd and unique vehicles.
