some cars suffer the problem and some do not. oil passage from block up
through head is sludged up. typical of a car with poor oil change history.
the right fix is to remove the head and clean the passage .

this was a problem with old straight 6 cylinder chevy engines back in the
days prior to oil filters being fitted as standard equiptment. the 216 and
235 c.i. engines just ate rocker shafts and rockers. the valve adjusters
would just chew up the push rods due to virtually no top end lubication. an
external oil line was offered as a "dealer" repair as an alternative to
pulling the head and doing job right way.

they taped oil pressure off of the oil pressure warning light switch using a
"t" fitting and there was a tapped hole in the head with a plug in it that
went to the oil feed to the rocker shaft assy. they ran a copper tube from
"t" fitting to the head. instant bypass of the oil passage through the
block to the head. there was another trick to improve those rocker shafts
and it required pinching shut a tube that bled off excess oil pressure from
the shaft assy. giving it a so-so, kind of pressurised rocker shaft assy.

when dealing with rocker shaft assemblies it is always good to remember that
a reasonable amount of sludge ends up in the shaft. it has no way out and
can cause havoc if it bolcks the oil holes to lubricate the rockers. clean
it out before it gives you the shaft!

also if the car has been run for any extended periods with poor to top end
oiling you are probably looking at gaulled valve guides. once oil has been
restored you will know if they are badly worn due to lack of lubrication or
not! best to check guides if head is off .

chuck.
