Actually, just like the frets on a guitar, location is important for
resonator style mufflers (not quite as crucial to full baffle/chambered
mufflers) The middle chamber is generally designed to resonate at various
ascending frequencies in order to cancel unwanted noise (not the "music....")
Positive exhaust waves departing the exhaust valve rim, and the
reciprocal partial pressure waves which begin at the tailpipe tip and return
to the exhaust valve rim to equalize pressure must be about 180* apart on the
event line, or backpressure will vary at steady revs and will not remain
linear with accel/decel. There are several fundamental formulae for
determining optimum bore size and chamber volume in the SAE archives.
