Repro Lucas Battery

I just had to replace a new reproduction Lucas tar-top battery that had
only been in the car since I got the engine running after rebuild. This
car has not even been on the road yet! I had been charging it with a
Surecharge float charger and getting corrosion on the terminals
from long term float charging. It cooked off the battery acid below the
plates on one cell and the rest were low. I have only run the engine
for a gallon or two of gas so far, so I don't think the charging circuit
in the car did this. The local Pep Boys put it on a battery analyzer
and gave me a thumbs down on it. Replaced it with a Group 24 - 72 month
battery and the car is back to normal. The old battery was working fine
one day and acted like it was completely dead the next. Someone warned
me about the repro batteries being advertised in the usual catalogs.
For what I paid for the Lucas battery, I could have bought 2 1/2
batteries like the one I put in tonight. Someone kick me.
