Excellent advice, Paul.  What I did, was buy a cheap, plastic coated
deadblow hammer; the kind filled with lead pellets, and toss it into the
boot.  With that, I tighten as much as I like, with no damage to the knock
offs, although my knock offs were kind of beat up by the PO.
