The reason that the valves still sound noisy after a proper adjustment is
that the rocker arm end that touches on the valve stem has had a small
recess pounded into it after many years of use. I've seen some rockers with
as much as a .008 recess in them. When you adjust the rockers you are
sliding the feeler gauge across the whole face of the arm and the top of the
valve stem. Sure you use a .016 feeler gauge but add in the recess and you
have as much as .024 clearance. This plus worn rocker arm bushings and you
have one heck of a gap. There two ways to remedy this and one is, if the
recess isn't too deep, is to grind down the face of the rocker being very
careful not to over heat it or grind down so much that you get past the
hardened part. 2. Is to replace the rockers, (much prefered).
