If you are using a disc sander on large surfaces, you may induce
heat related warping. Without proper prep you may inject
contaminants into the metal.

Chemical strip the large areas and sandblast the nooks and
crannies. Then apply phosphoric acid metal prep. Then seal it up
to prevent surface oxidation.
