On the Morris with a very similar tank set-up I used three strands of strip
caulk from the local ACE weatherstripping section.  Screwing it down
squashed the caulk nicely into a waterproof seal that easily filled any gaps
in the meeting of the tank and car shell.  Lasts forever, excess 'ooze'
easily trimmed away, easily removed in the future.
