I believe now after two years getting everything just right that a
turbocharger is the best way to get mucho added performance out of a 1275
without an excessing overbore.
Even though the turbo unit I'm using is no longer available, I have seen
many appropriate units in the scrap yards. For mine, and all of them, the
trick is the fabrication of the intake/exhaust manifold that mates the turbo
to the motor and leaves room for an appropriate carb.
I get 31MPG on the freeway with the 5sp datsun tranny, 24 MPG when boosting
the s**t out of it up in the hills. It will boost to 10PSI but that is
neither necessary or adviseable. I regularly go for boost of about 3-5lbs
and back off or shift before it exceeds that. The sound is great, the idle
good, and with the Hyundai alum. core radiator, I don't even overheat around
town in traffic on 105 degree days. The 1.5" SU with K+N filter and a stub
stack give more than enough air to do the job. The acceleration is great
and I've yet to have any other spridget hold with it. I can't find a G-tech
to borrow or justify the dyno time just to get a HP reading, but in excess
of 100 HP seems a conservative guesstimate
I think that the turbo is beneficial even when not boosting hard. I
theorize that the high speed vanes thoroughly vaporize the gas before it
reaches the cylinders, far better that normally aspirated engines.
Somebody with the right skills might consider offering a manifold that will
mate a modern day readily available scrapyard turbo from a similar
displacement motor to a 1275 head. Of course then all you guys could catch
up to me. Bad idea, forget I mentioned it.
