Well new seals made no difference on my smokin 1098.
I replaced the head after work today and it still smoked like a chimney.
So I threw together a 1275 from some parts in the garage, it's bolted in
but it got to be too late and I still have to bolt on the carbs and
dizzy. I hope it works.
New rings and bearings, a miss matched batch of pistons, a hand full of
equal length push rods, new oil pump, used cam, etc.
The only part I had to make was the flywheel locating pegs.

I also think the 1098 had a cam timing problem, it idled beautifully but
had no power and sputtered at speed.
3 different sets of carbs, 3 dizzys, adjusted valves to spec and tried
them loose (incase the PO dropped a beter cam in it)
At first I thought it was a loose intake, no such luck.
I will dissassemble it this week just so I know what the PO did.
