You forgot that he has to divide by the square root of the wheelarch radius,
so if he has a square-arch on one side and a round-arch on the other, he's
screwed.

         I would measure real carefully to see which half is longer. Here's
how.... measure the complete width of the axle casing by building a jig out
of 2x4s (50 x 100s to you Europeans) such that a piece extends the width of
the car and 2 pieces, one at each end, extend toward the axle housing and
at right angles to the long piece and touch the outside of each backing
plate. Now, measure that total distance between the two short legs,  divide
by 2, subtract your IQ from the quotient, and if it's less than 24 ", I'd
be surprised.
