Try carfax.com. I used it when I bought a Suburban not too long ago. I think I paid $15.00 for one month of unlimited use. I ran the VIN for a couple of cars I used to own and the reports were accurate. I'm not sure how far back the database goes though as it did not find the original sale of my 1985 Jeep.
