Hi, Matt-

Since sythetics flow better than conventional oils, any small leaks you
have will increase to that extent. This
is what your friend really means.

Synthetics do not get by on viscousity,
they get by on superior film strength,
which allows them (grade for grade)
to run "thinner" thus, better flowability
under all circumstances while providing
superior torque/horsepower on the track, or the foregoing benefits along
with
superior fuel economy in street applications.

Where people go wrong with synthetics
is in not changing the oil (with filter) often
enough. This is not a function of oil "worn
out"; this is a function of cleaning out
contaminents such as acids and the tiny
metal particles present due to normal engine wear (don't want these
contaminents building up and circulating
around in your engine, especially the metal particles which are
abrasive).
