My recollection, which is born out by the article at
http://www.vtr.org/maintain/oil-overview.html would suggest that Gear Oil
and Motor Oil use a different scale to measure viscosity. The chart on the
afore mentioned page would indicate that 80W gear oil has about the same
viscosity as 20 or 30 weight motor oil.

However, I'm sure that as in the case we just witnessed with bolt grades, no
doubt there are other factors to be considered.
