I've gone through this drill a couple of times with my Midget, but didn't
have any problems like you describe. But one thing that seems a little odd to
me is:

I didn't have to do any "driving" to put my hubs back on - they went on
easily with firm hand pressure. No play, mind you, but didn't require driving
on. Not sure exactly what would cause this, but a couple of ideas here:
1) Spacer piece in place and in the correct orientation? If it's missing then
all the tension from the nut is being directly transferred from the inner
races through the bearings to the outer races and hub. That might put things
in a bind. Also if it's turned wrong it would be tought putting the hub back
on. I would actually expect it to be near impossible since I think it's
tapered to match the taper of the spindle.
2) Correct bearings?
Hopefully some other listers with more experience can come up with better
ideas.
