Hi, Jim-

No such thing as a dumb question.

SU's - Pick up a UniSyn Carb. Synchonizer; easiest method, cool tool!

Assume you have Haynes or other pertinent manual on your car wherein
SU carb. "setting" addressed? NO? Gotta
get one!

"Noisey 1st Gear" - Gerard already addressed this but, how noisey?
Matter
of extent. REALLY noisey? See:
www.Rivergate5speed.com
"in the event"

Brakes spongy - you already know what
is needed; you said it!

Engine weak on power - ignition timing
off most likely and, in addition, carb. mixtue setting (maybe) along
with valve
adjustment? Well then, might as well do:

A "Major" tune-up in accordance with manual in proper sequence. And do a
compression and leak down check first
(if you can) to know what results to expect
from the major tune-up; "mechanical"
condition first, everything else follows in
proper sequence - no "skipped" steps!

But, hell man, it moves; it's passed the
most basic, fundamental test!! Yhaaay!

Congrats! :)
