Hey, I said it would be interesting, not reliable.

Subaru pioneered the use of CVT for passenger cars, and then abandoned it.
Why? It is really not suited for heavy car type applications, and the darn
tranny kept shedding links on the band. (I know, I was one of the actual test
car drivers for the thing) It accelerated like a slug too, (4 door justy) No
one of the test car drivers wanted to take it out...

Funny, the Rex, with basically the same tranny, never had those problems,
but
it was a smaller engine and a much lighter car. (if you can believe that) The
CVT was only here for one or two years, and then dropped. I think Fuji Heavy
Industries (Subaru's present owner and actual maker of the cars) Forced it on
Subaru of America at the time. I rarely see one still on the road, but when I
do, I chuckle. I would never have bought one. However the early 2wd Justy's
with the stock three cylinder and manual transmission refused to die and would
run forever, I wish I still had the one that I had back in 1990.

I forget who but someone else (BMW?) is supposedly coming out with another
car with CVT tranny...
