I just spoke to a turbo shop in Sacramento. He explained clearly why I
shouldn't try this myself. The dynamic balancing of something that can spin
at 90K is CRITICAL. It seems that the smoke is caused by the high vacuum at
idle when the turbo is producing almost no boost at all. At that point oil
is sucked past a tired seal into the intake side producing the smoke. Its
not the oil pressure that governs it, its the vacuum. Since my just
completed rubuild, the idle vacuum is better than ever resulting in more
frequent idle-smoke episodes.
Unfortunately, rebuild/rebalance of the unit will be about $400-$500. I'm
just going to jack my idle up to 1200 and try to get through the summer
while hoarding my pennies for the next rainy season.
