CDR-

Vacuum assist (a la PCV set-up) IS a good thing, no doubt about it. This
is one
"smog thing" that works in the engine's
favor for sure, in it's "evacuation" of crankcase pressure as it
reintroduces
these gases back into the combustion
process. Keeps our atmosphere cleaner
too. A "win - win" deal, here!

Is it absolutely required in this instance?

I have to say no, I don't believe so, IMHE,
as long as you ventilate upper and lower halves of the engine
adequately.

You have the valve cover to vent the "top"
of the engine, and timing cover "flame
arrester" to vent the "bottom" half in terms
of crankcase "pressure".

And, for those of us running a "quiet"
cam "belt drive" with unvented cover,
we can plumb the old mechanical fuel
pump area of the block to vent the "bottom" of the engine. Of course, we
can all do this anyway, whether the timing
cover is vented or not. "More" is good!

With respect to venting into atmosphere
(instead of reintroducing these byproducts
back into the engine a la PCV system) let
us remember to "filter" these "takeoffs" which breath "in" as well as
"out" to keep
both "inside" and "outside" air as clean
as this system permits. Better yet, feed
all "takeoffs" into a "filtered" can.

I gotta get off this machine and go have
breakfast or I'm gonna starve to death!!

That's it!! I'm outta here...I mean it!!

Do you need vacuum assist for crankcase ventilation, or are good breathers
enough?
