If you need to move the car you could try sticking a long thin screwdriver
through the oil drain hole and moving the syncro-hub back. I pulled a trany
after getting stuck in 1st also. I replaced the usual parts and forks that
were still available, re-assembled the trany and on bench testing found that
it still stuck in first and the three little balls on the gear were showing. I
think that by moveing the the hub back to its' normal position it allows the
plunger to fall into its' detent freeing the gear. I only tried it without it
being in the car and I was able to free it every time, this is not a cure but
is one way to get the car to move, if it doesn't work on your car you were
going to have to drain the oil anyway. I fixed my transmission by putting a
washer on the main shaft limiting the motion of the hub as others mentioned. I
even found a transmission I bought for a spare had had this done
