A common problem after a restoration. Too much paint!
I find that a separate ground wire attached to the screws on the sending
unit solve many gas gauge problems (tach probs too)
Later Midgets did not have the screw in sender, I am not sure when they
did away with the screws but a good ground to a gas tank bolt and a
clean spot on the tank at that bolt should help.
