Dave-

Being a 1275 kinda guy, I know virtually
nothing about Spitfire 1500's however,
I am led to believe by those that do know
them that they "fail" at the bottom end
all the time and that this is a weak point
in 1500's.

(All engine's have a weak point somewhere....fr'instance, in the case of
1275's it's the head or head gasket, in
early 1098's it's the "small bearing" crankshaft, etc., etc.)

Of course, a lot of this is the way the
engine was treated and/or maintained
by others, before it became "yours"!!

Or, whether the engine was "properly"
rebuilt at the time of it's last overhaul.
