I agree.  I had very similar symptoms with my '67.  When I removed the 
engine/tranny to replace the clutch, I pulled the tail piece.  The speedo 
drive pinion retainer ( a flat washer with a tooth that fits into a keyway 
in the shaft) had been installed backwards, letting the retainer nut back 
off.  The pinion could slide back and forth about a half an inch, in and 
out of engagement with the speedo gear. The retaining washer and the nut 
were ruined and the threads on the shaft were messed up.

The PO was not a wrench, so this was from work that he had paid for.
