I will ASSume this is your 'mericun car, Bobbie. MOST 'mericun cars have
wear indicators build onto the brake pads so they SQUEEEEEELLLL when they
wear down. Most people think the wheels are going to fall off so they take
it to a garage to find out what that GAWDAWFUL noise is.
Wear indicators don't usually do permanent damage, so get the pads replaced
soon. If you don't, the pads will wear down to the backing plates and you
will destroy the rotors. The repair will then be MUCH more expensive.
If you really want to look for yourself, jack up the car and take off the
left front wheel. Look at the edge of the brake pad, inside the caliper. If
the part that touches the rotor is thin, you need pads. If the pad still has
more than about an 1/8" of thinkness, they are worn but the noise may be
something else. New pads will have about 3/8" of friction surface. (Depends
on the car.)
If the noise is coming from the rear, and you have drum brakes on the rear,
they are a PITA, so take it someplace for a fix. Disk brakes on the rear
will look basically the same as on the front.
