I had good luck on my old Bugeye windscreen by:

1) Wipe thoroughly with Windex
2) Boil water, then dunk a towel in the water as hot
as you can stand
3) lay the towel on the windscreen, let stand a minute
or so; dry with another towel. 
4) Repeat steps 2 and 3, but wipe clean with NEWSPRINT
or recycled paper instead of a towel.

Steps 1-3 thoroughly clean dirt, step 4 allows for
extremely mild abrasive cleaning.  It helped a lot for
me, YMMV.
