Hello,

Anyone have a good, functional convertible top frame they want to part ways
with for my 71 Midget?

Of more immediate concern, when I tore into my new Midget project, I found
some ugly rust eating away at the flange that accepts the sheet metal screws
that secure the middle/rear of the convertible top to the car (as well as
under the rubber and chrome cap that accept the first screw on either side
of the cockpit). I am assuming the easiest fix is just to grind down the bad
spots and have someone weld in a new flange. Any other recommendations?
Anyone in the Seattle area with the equipment to help me out? Maybe for free
beer and food?

As a side note, WHAT"S UP WITH THIS?: This car has a very thin layer of
body filler covering the vast majority of the back of the car. I noticed the
paint was checkered and cracked and dug in.. took it down to bare metal.
Guess what? Other than what appear to be a couple of factory era ball/peen
looking dents close to one of the tail lights, I can't find any hint of
damage to the sheet metal. I uncovered some surface rust that formed as a
result of moisture entering through the checkering in the paint, but I can't
find any other damage. Looked from the inside, no sign of body work, no
familiar creases in the metal from the outside. I'm perplexed. It's as if
someone, at sometime, tried to custom contour the back of the car. There was
thicker body filler jammed into the channel/crease where the trunk comp.
dives downward and the tail light housing rises, but this serves no purpose
other than to slightly round out the crease. The wonders of a 30 year old,
unrestored car. amazing.
