In this case it would be a less sure way as
the off-list exchange between Carter and
I on the subject (which you could have not
known about and thus not taken into
consideration) reveals this "smoke" dis-
appears after the engine warms up.

This would indicate at this point that
if it's a head gasket the leak is small
at this point (just beginning) so a compression check when the engine
is cold ("unexpanded") would be the
way to go in line with your prior post.

I also voiced the opinion that a car used
only once a week or so parked in cool
conditions with humidity to match, developes water (condensation) within
the exhaust system. 

As the "smoke" disappears shortly after
the engine warms up so, this may be
very natural in such circumstances.

When it does "smoke", there is no 
excessive "petroleum" odor and it
disappears into the air relatively quickly
as well.

All in all, your compression check idea
seems best (cold engine).
