. when we got to Texas the front  passengers side had
broken a stud. 

 pull in to my driveway and look at the  wheel and
shocked to see two studs missing. Two side by side not
opposed  what's up with that? Guess what I'm doing
tomorrow.

   Studs were waaay over tightened.  Suggest you
replace every one and then torque down to 40 ft lbs.
