I used an angle grinder to widen the hole, it took about 5 minutes to get
the hole just right and then about 10 minutes of wiggling and twisting to
get the LCB (from APT as well) through.  It doesn't take much grinding to
get just enough room to make it fit, I would hardly call the minimal hole
sizing 'draconian'.  I would call removing the head a seriously draconian
step in terms of time to avoid cutting 1-2" of metal in an area that is
readily coated with oil and is perhaps only noticed in concurs events.
Another issue is that if you remove the head and if you ever crack the LCB
or want to replace it, you'll have to pull the head again to fit another
one...  Unless you've got a concurs car, I can't see any downside to
grinding the hole bigger.  If you've got to remove the steering column, its
not time consuming, although it wasn't necessary in my install.
