Hi Greg,

Usually an indication that the pivot bearing in the jewel is worn, allowing the
rotating magnet to settle a bit and come close to the driven piece with each
cable revolution.  Many speedometer shops can rebuild the speedo to correct
this.  All it takes is money, but not a whole lot.  Usually less than $100.

This is not work for the DIY as you need an electric magnet wand and calibration
speedos to set it up right when the work is completed.

30 or 40 years with no lubrication does take it's toll on speedo heads!!!!!
